Agathoclea, op. 24

Mainly a marimba solo, Agathoclea has a brief battery percussion section to add to the excitement of this piece. Dance-like themes run throughout the work and make for a fun piece on your next program.

Program Notes

Agathoclea was a drum player and a courtesan like her mother “Oenanthe” from Samos Island. She was very beautiful, so Ptolemy the fourth, the Philopater (221-204 B.C.), loved her deeply. Plutarch states Agathoclea in his Erotic 9,735 D.
