Intrepid Overture

Intrepid Overture conveys a spirit of fearlessness, adventure, bravado, and courage. The energetic opening sets the mood for a bold, aggressive principal theme. This is followed by a series of cadenzas (trombone, horn and bass), transitioning to an expressive middle section which features solo cornet and flugelhorn. In the final section the music returns to themes from the spirited opening, with the lyrical middle theme eventually returning to add to the festivities as the music comes to a fiery conclusion.

Program Notes

Intrepid Overture was commissioned by the Market Rasen Band, Lincoln UK, through funding support of the England Arts Council. It received its premiere performance by the Black Dyke Band in Lincoln Cathedral, April 28, 2018.

In the composer’s words, “when I considered the city of Lincoln and the notable figures who hailed from there such as William the Conqueror, William Byrd and Gilbert Vinter, it seemed to me that the common trait they shared was fearlessness. Hence, this music conveys a spirit of adventure, bravado and courage.”
