Program Notes
Little Song is an intermediate to advanced solo for 4.3-octave marimba. Though it does not ask much of the performer in terms of advanced technical skill, it is rich in opportunities for deep lyrical expression. The title is, perhaps, a misnomer, for the emotional climax of the piece is anything but small. But then, such is the power of music itself - even the “littlest” of songs can contain multitudes within.
The piece opens with a gentle chorale, setting the stage for what’s to come: the titular little song. A simple little melody over a little light harmony. The melody is then repeated in a higher register, with a few added flourishes, before settling back into a second chorale. Gradually, the chorale deepens and grows increasingly lush before finally bursting into the main theme once more. As the theme once again comes to a close, the little song ends as it began: quiet, unassuming, and full of peace. Little Song’s" expressive melody and musicality make it a perfect recital piece that both performers and audiences will enjoy.
